An exercise stress test shows how the heart responds to physical exertion, under monitoring, at the practice where clinically appropriate.
What an exercise stress test is
A monitored exercise assessment used to evaluate the heart’s response to physical exertion. Your heart rhythm and blood pressure are monitored during exercise.
Why it may be recommended
Dr Ramagaga may recommend a stress test to help investigate symptoms that occur with exertion or as part of a cardiovascular assessment. Like any test, it answers particular clinical questions and does not identify every heart condition.
What may happen during the test
Suitability is assessed beforehand. During the test you exercise while being monitored. Tell the clinical team straight away if you develop symptoms such as chest discomfort, dizziness or unusual breathlessness.
Preparing safely
Follow any instructions the practice gives you when your appointment is arranged. Never stop or change a prescribed medication unless your doctor directs you to. Bring a list of your current medication and any previous cardiology reports or test results. Ask the practice whether to wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for exercise.
Results and next steps
Dr Ramagaga explains the findings alongside your symptoms and history and discusses any next step, which may include treatment, follow-up or further investigation where clinically indicated.
