A transthoracic echocardiogram is an ultrasound examination of the heart, available at the practice where clinically appropriate.
What an echocardiogram is
An ultrasound examination used to assess the structure and function of the heart, including how the heart muscle and valves are working. The test does not use ionising radiation.
Why it may be recommended
Dr Ramagaga may recommend an echocardiogram to help investigate symptoms or to assess heart muscle or valve function as part of your assessment or follow-up. It answers specific clinical questions and does not identify every heart condition.
What may happen during the test
Images are obtained using a probe placed on the chest. The clinical team will explain each step and let you know if you need to change position during the examination.
Preparing safely
Follow any instructions the practice gives you when your appointment is arranged. Never stop or change a prescribed medication unless your doctor directs you to. Bring a list of your current medication and any previous cardiology reports or test results.
Results and next steps
Dr Ramagaga discusses the results in the context of your symptoms and medical history, then explains any next steps — which may include no further testing, ongoing monitoring, or another investigation where appropriate.
